I woke up to a nice surprise yesterday when I saw the Clipse had dropped their first single for their new project. “Ace Trumpets” is now out on the DSP’s and it’s on their new album dropping on July 11th, Let God Sort Em Out. The track is produced by Pharrell and the whole album was recorded at the Louis Vuitton HQ in Paris… How baller is that though? Pusha T and No Malice are back with Pharrell on the boards? Definitely something to look forward to.
And here’s the audio for the first single. Btw, Roc Nation handling distribution and KAWS on the artwork. The whole merch and physical format preorders are up… This is going to be crazy.
The Thornton brothers coming back together is something I wasn’t sure would happen. But here we go… And let’s go back to their catalog just a bit in case you forgot how dope they are and why this is so major. Sure you know “Grindin” a long with their feature on “What Happened to that Boy” but their catalog is so much deeper than that. My favorite track from Clipse gotta be “Virginia” which holds up so well. That Neptunes beat and the flows… Hard.
They landed on the map with their album Lord Willin’ and before that they had the project, Exclusive Audio Footage. Pharrell was bubbling, Clipse were bubbling… It was a great time… After Lord Willin’, Clipse came back with their follow up, Hell Hath No Fury but dealt with major record label issues that delayed the project dropping. “Mr. Me Too” was one of the first singles and it was crazy with Pharrell joining them on the mic. It was tracks like “Ride Around Shining”, “Keys Open Doors”, and “Hello New World” that kept my finger on the rewind button. Here’s “Keys Open Doors” which is just too dope.
But hold up… In between album, Clipse turned to the mixtape circuit with We Got it 4 Cheap Vol. 1 and We Got it 4 Cheap Vol. 2. Both major mixtapes that kept the internet and the Cipse brand buzzin. Fans loved Pusha T and Malice and couldn’t wait for them to drop Hell Hath No Fury but record label issues couldn’t hold them back from releasing new music to the world. Did you miss these mixtapes? If so, time to catch up… Clipse rhyming over the Beanie Sigel “Nothin Like It” was something… Was this Pusha’s first time over Kanye production? I think so? Not sure why these solo tracks aren’t on YouTube so you just get the whole mixtapes.
Clipse mixtape season was a great appetizer to Hell Hath No Fury since there was a 4 year gap between Lord Willin’ and Hell Hath No Fury.
After Hell Hath No Fury, Clipse dropped We Got it 4 Cheap Vol. 3 where The Re-Up Gang did their thing over some of the best beats in the streets at the time.
then yup… another mixtape as Clipse got ready for their 4th and final album… The mixtape was Road Til the Casket Drops.
And then Til the Casket Drops hit us in late 2009. This was their album post the Jive record deal and while there were some cuts, in my opinion it didn’t match what they had in albums and mixtapes prior…. Could have been because the brothers were already starting to go their way with Malice to God and Pusha T ready to keep doing his rap thing where his solo career would blow up. “Kinda Like a Big Deal” was one of the singles that hit me pairing Clipse with Kanye.
Clipse went quiet after Til the Casket Drops came out. But now here are in 2025 and Clipse got their new album dropping… I know I’ll be bumpin all of my old Clipse CD’s now that we got some hype leading up to the new project. Any Clipse fans in the building? Who else is ready for this?
