Have you ever seen athleticism that just jumps off the screen? Think Vince Carter dunking his whole career. Think Randy Moss galloping down the sidelines and catching a bomb… Well that’s what I felt when I saw Gunnar Henderson play for the first time. It was during the Futures game a couple of years ago and he just looked cool. He played cool too… The game was nice, the hair was flowy, and he had a Charlie Hustle type demeanor sliding all around the dirt. You up on Gunnar though?

Ripped a few packs with Murs recently and we caught a vibe. Never a bad time when you can revisit the sports card hobby we all loved so much growing up. Really cool to see the pandemic give the hobby a boost and it’s definitely here to stay with more people jumping back into it.

If I had to compare Jazz to a rapper it would have to be none other that JID. JID stays in the pocket of every verse and just jabs with lyrical drip that has you going… wait… what? JID is just one of those dudes, like Jazz Chisholm, that is accumulating points and ascending to superstardom. We know J. Cole has JID’s best interests but do the Miami Marlins have the vision to keep Jazz and lock him up long term?

As a kid in the late 80’s, my older brother, dad, and I would take a drive down to Mission Valley the first Friday of every month. Sports cards were widely popular when we were kids and the Scottish Rite Event Center was the spot for our beloved monthly baseball card show. We would hit the show every month with a little bit of pocket money that we’d spend on packs of cards, singles of players we liked, and supplies that we needed to sleeve up our good cards. Ahhhh… the good ole days in sunny San Diego at the Scottish Rite Center as a young sports card nerd.

Seeing Juan Soto rockin a Trea Turner jersey at the Dodgers Wild Card game a few days ago was absolute money. It’s this type of camaraderie that makes me love baseball so much. You just never see things like that happen. Soto, Scherzer, and Scherzer celebrating with each others after the big Dodgers win was super cool. Soto was a fan that night of good baseball. He could have been anywhere else but he chose to support his boys. Mad respect right there!

Growing up, I was a big Denver Broncos fan so of course John Elway was my guy. I tried to emulate my pick up football game around Randall Cunningham and John Elway. I remember crying myself to sleep when the Broncos lost the Super Bowl at Jack Murphy Stadium back in 1988. They got absolutely smashed as the Redskins dropped 35 in the 2nd quarter which is about as rough as you can get. I wore my Elway jersey to watch the game and was totally devastated by the loss.

For the last 25 years of my life I have been a diehard Fantasy Football guy. I used to buy the draft magazines, do all of the studying, catch all of the Matthew Berry segments, make sick ranking spreadsheets, and listen to podcasts left and right. From there I’d have my fantasy drafts and then be stuck with my teams for a whole season. Sure there’s the weekly waiver wire to plan for and trades to be made throughout the season but how many of us in our 40’s really want to scour homies’ rosters and try to make a trade? Yeah… Literally nobody. So this season I’m going to focus energy on stacking my modern football card collection and see if the knowledge I gain there helps on the fantasy football side of things.

Alright look…. I’m just settling down at my computer and I’m finally getting into the new Benny the Butcher & Harry Fraud album, The Plugs I Met 2 as well as the new Kota the Friend & Statik Selektah album. They both dropped yesterday and I think these are 2 special albums that could go down as albums of the year. My wife is way into NCIS reruns (or something similar) in the living room and my baby boy is fast asleep in his crib. This means that I have maybe an hour before I have to get back to daddy duty so we’re going to make the most of this time together.

The current sports cards boom has me and many others around my age chasing cards from our childhood. Back in the 80’s and 90’s when I collected, it was all about buying wax packs in hopes that I might pull that special rookie card I was chasing. There were sports card shops all over the city and there were also sports card shows as well. I would save up what little money I had to buy packs and then maybe splurge on a special card at the shows.

I can’t even remember what a Jordan rookie card was going for in the early 90’s but I think $700 seems about right for mint condition? Unfortunately all of my old Beckett Basketball Monthly magazines are stowed away in my parents’ attic so I haven’t had a chance to flip through the pricing pages to confirm what my memory recalls. The 86 Fleer Jordan was the holy grail of sports cards for kids my age back then and I would dream about that damn thing. I would devise plans as to how I could buy it, steal it, trade for it, or find any other way I could get my hands on it. I never did get that ‘86 Fleer Jordan rookie card but I still think about it. And while most fiscally responsible adults are paying off their mortgage on their nice houses and saving money for their future, I’m still thinking about that damn Jordan rookie.

Voices have been getting sharpened for years.

Okay, I get it. You used to collect baseball cards but you’re not into it anymore. For real though… You have kids and a family and a job that really is a grind. You crush it at pivot tables and v-lookups at work but what gives you that drive? What motivates you? Well…. Financial freedom motivates me. And when I see an opportunity open up on the revenue side of things I am like a shark in blood infested water. I throw on the Alchemist beats in my headphones and I get to hustling. All I’m trying to do is grow my bottom like enough that I can comfortably get that iced out California chain by my boy Ben Baller. On the discount too because he knows I’m out here putting in work and will help him sell more cards. This is the greatest marketing opportunity of my lifetime. I can talk about rap and baseball cards at the same time. Yup…. I’m in my zone.

My brother and I don’t know where all of our old wrestling cards but they are definitely somewhere in my Dad’s attic. To bring back those 1985 vibes I decided to buy an unopened 1985 wax pack of these cards off of eBay. Next I kept it in the original padded envelope it was shipped in and dropped it off at my brother’s house. He had no idea what was inside but he did have an AMAZING knowledge base and memory back to pull from. Would Todd pull a Hogan?
