The Great Muta was my favorite wrestler in the early to mid-90s as I just thought his style, look, technique, and overall skillset were different than a lot of the other wrestlers I watched at that time. While I was always a hardcore WWF fan in the 80s and well into the 90s, I also liked WCW. The early WCW before they hit it out of the park with NWO. WCW aka World Championship Wrestling had some really good wrestlers on the roster in the 90’s and as a kid I had nothing but time so I welcomed all of the wrestling that was on the USA Network and TBS.
They had trading cards, they had good wrestling figures, and they had a lot of names you knew but also up and comers that you could see were legit. Hogan, Macho Man, Ric Flair, Terry Funk, Vader, Steamboat but also Stunning Steve Austin, Cactus Jack, Flyin’ Brian Pillman, and so many more… How about Diamond Studd back in the early 90s showing some early nuggets of what was to eventually come via Razor Ramon over in the WWF.
I can’t lie though… Sometimes WCW was super corny with the gimmicks and storylines but it was all entertaining to me. I just really liked watching any wrestling I could back in those days so I welcomed both WWF and WCW on my TV set… A Saturday afternoon with some WCW on was honestly one of my favorites ways to past the time as a kid back in the 90s. Just post up on that old school couch, heat up a Hot Pockets, grab an Orange Crush and just kick it.
I’ve been watching a lot of old wrestling videos lately and I kind of forgot how awesome The Great Muta was back in the late 80s and 90s. I just knew that whenever he was going to be wrestling I couldn’t miss it. When did he start spitting the green mist out of his mouth? Was that always or did that develop with his character? If you haven’t seen The Great Muta before, I think this match with Sting is a good spot to start.
The Great Muta would come to the ring with this sick mask and then underneath it his face was painted and then his ring attire was straight fire… That was just the cruise up to the ring which he always made sure to take his time getting to the squared circle. He built up the mystique so well… The Great Muta was legit. Hella slept on too in my humble opinion. The Great Muta and Sting feuded for a while in the 90s but seeing them on the same Tag Team against The Steiners? This is only a few minutes… you should peep…
So lately I’ve been watching some old The Great Muta matches and I came across one I had never seen. Stunning Steve Austin was a wrestler you could always tell could be a mega star if he got the right push back then… The way he walked to the ring, the way he wrestled, the interviews… he just had it… We obviously all know him as Stone Cold Steve Austin but I feel a lot of people sleep on how dope he was in the WCW way back then… So when I saw this match pop up on my YouTube search results page for The Great Muta I couldn’t ignore it… Let’s go back to 1994 on this one for The Great Muta Vs. Stunning Steve Austin for the WCW US Title from Spring Stampede.
I feel like I’m about to go on a The Great Muta and WCW 90s binge right now… Nothing wrong with that right? Here’s the best of 1994 from WCW… Some cringe… Some fire… All nostalgia at its finest though if you were a fan of wrestling back in the good ole days.
