Take it back to 1992 and those suede Vans were a smash. They were Vans so they didn’t cost a ton and then when you bought the shoes, you knew you needed that spray… let me tell you… those mustard suede Vans put in some strategic steps in ‘92 - ‘93… Kickball in the suedes? Nope… I shoot j’s so I could keep the kicks crispy…
Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High had everybody in San Diego in slip-on checkerboards but in 1992, I was in 6th grade and needed a little something to let the ladies know that I had a little bit of game.
I saw that Beastie Boys Check Your Head cover and I was gaining confidence that if I liked rap music, I could present myself in a different way… I could be more casual… be more cool… and that’s what Vans did for me… that’s what skate shops did for me… they gave a budget-minded mom an opportunity to get her kids “cool” San Diego type clothes for the schoolyear… I didn’t even know about suede that much either… i saw a couple of older kids starting to rock the suede joints so I needed them in my life.
Nike Air Jordans were cool and all and I wanted every pair but I always knew their price tag so they were a no-go. But some fresh Vans every once in awhile made me feel cool… the way I rocked those tube sicks with the cords shorts and the Vans Authentics? The slip-ons? Old skools? all butter…
This is a shout out to those Vans back in the early 90s… when the spray went on those suede kicks from ‘92 it was a wrap… nobody was killin my vibe witt those on my feet with the white tube socks half way up the calf… so fire.
and shout out to Spicoli for always holding it down for the culture…
