When I listen to the Yams and Odessa Kane album, I hear “It Was That Time” and it reminds me of some old DJ Premier with a west coast Jeru the Damaja. I know that is a crazy comparison but hear me… This beat is straight up old school Pete Rock meets DJ Premier in my headphones… it sounds really well anywhere I listen to it and that is a shout out to Rocky R3y who handled the engineering. With the beat fire and the sound clean, Odessa Kane comes in like an assassin for a quick kill.
Back when the album dropped, me and Odessa chopped it up about the idea of some kind of a skate video. Yams comes from that background and was down as long as we kept it on brand. When Odessa’s videographer Chris Gleary came into the mix, Chris literally told me how much old school hip hop and skate culture inspired him. This whole story of how we all came together to create such a great piece of art will be covered… It’s too good not to. For a quick look at Odessa Kane and Chris Gleary’s work, check this one out. And real talk, this is one of my favorite songs of the past few years easy…
We had worked with Chris on the videos for “Fade Away”, “Skyscrapers”, and “Roll Out” and fam… we have more coming… here’s “Roll Out” in case you missed it.
Odessa, Yams, and Chris killed this. Behind the scenes we also had Tareq Zaatari and Ruben Gonzalez in the mix and there photography and videography are going to hit you here soon.
This is underground hip hop and visual art from San Diego, CA. We hit up 2 skate parks in this shoot. One in Paradise Hills and the other in Barrio Logan. Both down here in South San Diego. We also worked with Slappy's Garage in downtown San Diego to coordinate a skate shop takeover and the vibe and the execution of it all were flawless. Yams and Odessa Kane are from San Diego and both grew up in Southeast San Diego neighborhood of Paradise Hills. In the video, you can find Odessa Kane skating in the same cul-de-sac where he grew up. Now, many years later, Odessa is still skating that cul-de-sac but now he has stories to tell. Partnered with Yams, these cats are a really dope duo that deserves your attention. Sprinkle in Chris Gleary to the mix and you have a stunning visual art piece... yup, i said it, stunning. "It Was That Time" is here... go peep and follow all of these kids across social!
