The Weight I’ve Carried: A Personal Story for Mental Health Awareness Month

May 25, 2025 Tim C.

It’s mental health awareness month and I know I have to contribute. But I also know that I’ll go deep on stuff that can hit a spot inside of mind I try to stay away from. It’s a spot that I know I’ll revisit when I fall again and when I do, it’s honestly the worst thing you could encounter… or let me rephrase, the worst thing that I’ve encountered. Some people get hit with crazy trauma.. others hit with death to those around them. For others, they might battle demons. Everybody has their inner struggles they might not wear on their sleeve… Here’s what you gotta know though… Don’t judge somebody on the type of struggles they have because you don’t know how each individual copes and deals with what they’re facing.

Mike Bibby and The Collection

May 14, 2025 Alex Marquardt

This month I catch a social media post about an event at Gila River Casino. The post is for “The Collection by Gila River”. The post describes the event as a “sneaker lover’s dream”, so they had my attention.  The Collection is described as an event to discover the history and artistry behind each pair from Mike Bibby’s personal collection. The highlights of the event include iconic Jordan Brand collaborations from Bibby’s collection that span decades with rare, limited edition releases and exclusive colorways straight from the vault. So of course I had to check it out.

Best Portable CD Players: A Lookback at Vintage Sony Discmans

February 21, 2025 Tim C.

Before streaming put every song at our fingertips, portable CD players were the ultimate way to take music on the go. Find a hip hop head from the late ‘90s or early 2000s, and you can guarantee they had a Discman tucked inside their Jansport. Whether it was a brand new album from Tower Records or Wherehouse Music, a CD swiped from a homie’s Case Logic, or a burned mix packed with heat, carrying a stash of CDs was essential. Flipping through someone’s CD book was like reading their music DNA—instant respect if their collection was solid. In this article, I take you back in time to look at portable Sony Discmans from the 80s, 90s, and 00s. I think this will definitely take you down a walk through memory lane…

DJ Quik - Safe + Sound: 30th Anniversary of a West Coast Classic Rap Album

February 20, 2025 Tim C.

DJ Quik’s Safe + Sound turns 30 this year, and it still stands as one of the smoothest, funkiest, and best-produced West Coast rap albums of all time. Back in ‘95, the hype was real… Quik had been quiet while MC Eiht took shots at him, only to break his silence with the legendary diss track, 'Dollaz & Sense.' That moment set the stage for Safe + Sound, an album that blended live instrumentation, polished storytelling, and Quik’s signature G-Funk style. From the moment I cracked open the CD case to the first playthrough, this record was unforgettable. Three decades later, it still holds up as a defining moment in West Coast rap.

The Jordan Ten - 10 out of 10

January 2, 2025 Alex Marquardt

Walk to the basketball section of a Foot Locker today and you will see innovative technology built into sneakers with the bright and loud color ways. It could be the Giannis Immortality or the Luca 3. It could be the G.T. Cut 3, Tatum 3 or even the Sabrina 2. The colors pop, the designs are revolutionary and unique. Silhouettes have to stand out to grab our attention. The performance that shoe offer have to match the demand that the athletes that wear it, put it through. Athletes of every age….

The Future for Nike Is Bright - Elliott Hill in as New CEO

November 5, 2024 Alex Marquardt

Some of us have been in the sneaker space for a long time. I am grateful for the days of sitting outside of shopping malls with like-minded sneakerheads as we waited for the sun to come up and Foot Locker to open. Here in Arizona, it was always Metrocenter.  If I couldn’t snag the new Jordans at Foot Locker, I would take the escalator up to Champs. But some mornings, your size sold out before you got to any of the registers. And if they did, you had to drive home to crack open the Yellow Pages (some of you might have to google that one) and call other stores to find out what sizes they had in stock. If Chris-Town Mall had the size, I jumped in the ’84 Honda CRX and drove across the valley to pick em up.

Shady's Back, Tell A Friend

September 4, 2024 Alex Marquardt

In 2002, I see a poster for the The Eminem Show and Marshall has on a black Jordan tank, Nike beanie, grey sweats and pair of Jordan 3 True Blues that popped right off the paper. The look is a big departure from the white tee, jeans and bleached hair that most fans would connect with him just a few years earlier. This is a year before Marshall would officially collaborate with Nike and three years before he would become the first rapper to ever collaborate with Jordan Brand. Em certainly wasn’t the first rapper to sign with a sneaker company, but his contribution to sneaker collabs is right up there with Travis and Ye

July 27, 2024 Alex Marquardt

It’s hard to explain how the passing someone you had never met can affect you. But on January 26, 2020, we were hit with a lot of emotions. When we heard the news about the helicopter crash in Calabasas that took the lives of 9 people including Kobe and Gianna Bryant, it was a lot to process.

While Caitlin Clark will continue to hear chatter about her game and her big shoe deal, we all can’t ignore the effect that this will have on the WNBA…. the effect that this will have with women sports…. This is big. Yet Caitlin Clark will get hated on, talked about, and challenged all over the league. It’s a fascinating story to watch playout through the year…

THE RAP GAME IS CRAZY RIGHT NOW

April 8, 2024 Tim C.

The rap game has been wild this year. We got Kendrick, Cole, and Drake battling for who’s the top dog while Diddy and everybody around him are crashing. ScHoolboy dropped a great album. Kanye is sitting on a groundbreaking album with 2 more Vultures on the way and his solo project. His daughter, North West is even getting in the game with her debut album dropping later this year. Metro Boomin and Future got another one dropping this week… Will we see Kendrick featured and giving Cole the ether? When is Pusha T dropping? What about JID? This is about to be a good year for our ears.

THE PORTABLE CASSETTE PLAYER

March 3, 2024 Tim C.

Would you believe me if I said that the cassette culture is growing? Would you believe me if I said that top artists are now manufacturing small runs of cassette tapes again? What if I told you that two companies have released brand new portable cassette players in the last couple of years? Well that is what’s happening. Cassette hype is picking up a lot of steam and the analog feels they provide take both teens and adults in their 40’s and 50’s back to their music collections.

BROTHA LYNCH HUNG - 24 DEEP

February 27, 2024 Tim C.

In 1993, I first heard Brotha Lynch Hung’s track “I Had 2 Gat Ya”. I was 13 years old and had just finished rec hoops and needed a ride home. My older brother’s friend Stefan was our referee for basketball and I always just admired his style and swagger. He gave me a ride home that Friday and introduced me to a song that would own my life in late ‘93. His system sent chills to my core when I heard Lynch start rapping and that beat straight KNOCKIN in Stefan’s system… Brotha Lynch had officially arrived on the scene and I had a new rapper alter ego to sink my teeth into.

NFL'S BEST CLEATS: THEN AND NOW

February 7, 2024 Alex M.

At the end of every year, the sneakerheads will talk about what was the sneaker of the year. But as we head into Super Bowl Sunday, what are the NFL cleats of the year? It’s been great seeing how football cleats have evolved over the years and now each football game, I find myself looking at the cleats players are wearing than the actual game. I don’t want to miss some custom kicks that might only be worn one game. I also don’t want to miss what Jalen Hurts will have on his feet because he might change his kicks at halftime. What players will be showing out with their cleats for the Super Bowl?
