All-Star Weekend and the Book 2

April 17, 2026 Alex Marquardt

The Book 2 rollout matched the personality of Devin Booker. Until it didn’t. We saw a few concept sketches. A few pictures emerged, and then Book showed them off from Nike University. Subtle. No loud roll out. Just like Devin himself. And then something happened that I couldn’t have guessed…let’s get into it.

Rewind to the Book 1 release. The marketing of the Book 1 was simple. Just like Devin. He’s a lowkey superstar. He’s quiet. He doesn’t need the flash and the bright lights. And that characteristic is matched by what we saw for the marketing for his first shoe. Booker was hiding shoes around the valley and telling social media to come and grab them. For the Book 2, we got a video of Devin Booker working out with Chris Brickley and in the video the shoes were blurred out. It was that simple. It wasn’t flashy and wasn’t a huge activation. It was…simple. Just like Devin Booker himself. He began wearing the Book 2 for pre-game, and the launch for the Book 2 hit.

The worst thing about the Book 1 release was the location, Florida. The first 500 pairs of the Book 1 were given to fans at All-Star Weekend, 3000 miles away from Phoenix. In an interview, Devin explained that he regretted that piece of the Book 1 roll-out and he felt that he had to make it up to his fans in the Valley with the Book 2 roll out, and he absolutely did.

Nike has given us some incredible activations lately. The roll out of the Jordan 1 Lost and Found might go down as one of the best sneaker activations in history. The pop-up for the Jordan 4 Undefeated in Chicago was incredible. And if you have been a Mid90s readers for a while, you know I was a huge fan of the pop-up for the Lebron 4 Fruity Pebbles. But we are talking about Jordan and Lebron. Two of the biggest names in the history of the game. And Chicago and L.A, two HUGE sports markets. The sales budget for those two athletes and those two cities is certainly different than Devin Booker and Phoenix.  And that’s what makes the Book 2 rollout even more surprising.

It started on January 10th.  Book takes to Instagram with a cryptic message about a meet up. Foot Locker then invites fans out to 201 E Jefferson for a pop-up fan event. Arizona doesn’t get pop up events!??! But for the first time in my sneaker head memory, it was about to happen. If you’re a Booker fan, the ‘License to Skill’ campaign really worked. It tied into the Call of Duty skin of a black tuxedo and leaned all the way into the James Bond tie in. The branding had Devin in the 007ish tuxedo. The 18-wheeler truck had the branding on the cargo container and they gave us a hard wood outdoor basketball court! All the top-secret spy equipment was on display but with a twist of yesteryear, with the vhs tapes and the old school computer monitors. And the Book 2 was there for the fans that were willing to face the crowd and the lines. Great Event. Great Sneaker. And a memory that I won’t forget.

Fast forward to all-star weekend. All-star weekend has always been important to the sneaker community. In the 90s, the all-star game was Nike’s opportunity to give us a colorway that broke away from the traditional colors that they provided for their signature athletes. Before the internet took away every opportunity for consumers to be surprised by something new, you could watch the all-star game and see a new kick for the first time, on a player’s feet. The tradition of new colorway offerings during all-star weekend is as dependable as a bad dunk contest and a celebrity basketball game that no one watches. And 2026 All Star was no exception.

Nike Basketball launched the “Warning Label” collection. And EVERY pair in spectacular. The collection is recognized by the metallic finish for each shoe and the molded case that they came in. Each shoe in the collection also had a “charm” lace lock that was the cherry on top. The collection was released almost exclusively in Los Angeles for All Star weekend. Foot Locker had a pop up event. The lines were up to 5 hours long, and the organization of the event and line control itself left a lot to be desired. Those videos are easy to find online and that’s not the topic you’re here for. Footlocker also offered the Nike Future and the GT 4, but access and availability were both certainly limited. For me, of course the Book 2 owned the weekend, but I actually really like the Lebron 23 with the metallic alligator skin. And without question, the lace lock that stood above the rest was the KD ‘reaper’, with its hood and nike swoosh on the side.

Along with the Book 2 Warning label, Nike goes all in on Book 2 x Fragment collab. Fragment is more than a brand. Hiroshi Fujiwara is a pioneer of streetwear. Many in the industry have called him the Godfather of Streetwear. His designes shaped the culture of streetwear. His hip hop and punk inspired designed of the 1980s were entirely new. The connection between Fujiwara and Booker happened in late 2024 at Fashion Week in New York. They happened to be at the same event and Devin Booker had the chance to meet the icon. Book showed him a pair of the Book 1 in the python colorway. A few moments later, Fujiwara posts the pair on his Instagram and tags Devin. They collaborate together and the Book 1 Fragment is born. Only 25 pairs were made and each pair were sold at Fujiwara’s Fragment store in Japan. This year they continued their relationship with the Book 2 Fragment.

According to Devin Booker, the real culture is in L.A., specifically in the Crenshaw Inglewood area. So that became the location of an absolutely incredible fan experience during All Star Weekend. Devin Booker and Hiroshi Fujiwara appeared at Creanshaw High School for an activation for the release of the Nike Book 2 Fragmant warning label addition. The shoe came in the oversized box with the molded shoe case within the blue box. It had the metallic fragment blue swoosh in the instep and the metallic silver on the outside of the shoe. They came with the blue scorion lace locks and both creators took time to sign every box that was sold. The Fragment signature lighning bolts were stitched within the two Os in Bookers name on the tounge. Fujiwara is a minimalist. Just like Devin Booker. These two were made to collaborate. And the shoe design simply works. Book would Wear the Fragment during the 3 Point contest during All Star Weekend where he would take 2nd place. Damian Lillard might have won the 3 Point contest, but the Fragment was the champion that night.

Now we are headed into the final stretch of the regular season and into the playoffs. The suns are currently fighting for the Play-In. This was a season that most analysts thougth the suns would tank. But they are a scrappy team with a fantastic leader. Suns and the fans are lucky to have Book. We might not have a title at the end of the season. But we will have great kicks. Hope you picked up a pair this season. Make sure you wear em.
